The Reputation Management War Continues
The battle between small businesses and online review and complaint sites has never been more active. Over the past 4 years online reputation management has grown in popularity at an astonishing rate.
There are more reputation threats online now than ever. With the growth and popularity of online reputation management there has been an explosion of online complaint sites popping up online to counter businesses reputation management efforts.
Most of these online complaint sites are owned but individuals who are hoping that businesses will pay them a monthly or yearly protection fee, somewhat like the mafia did back in the old days. If you pay the fee your name and business will not be bashed on their websites or they will make it look less damaging. These small operations are simply extortion schemes that target businesses that in most cases already have 1 or 2 complaints about them online. The complaint sites will copy and duplicate the complaint from one site to theirs in the hopes that their sites negative page about you will rank high on Google, and you will find it and contact them for it to be removed.
The flip side is some of these complaint sites are secretly owned by reputation management companies. I know for a fact that some of the smaller complaint sites online are owned or controlled by reputation management firms. Reputation Management companies will get involved with these type of complaint sites to have some leverage against their competition and clients. If they own the site they will tell you they can most likely have the bad links removed and bury the other bad ones about you. Also if you contact a reputation management company to do business with them and give them you name, they might add you to their complaint sites (or others) in order to make your chances of signing-up with them greater.
There is even a silent war between reputation management companies. Most reputation management companies that have been around for a year or more can tell you, they have been wrongfully listed on many online complaint sites by competitors or the owners of the complaint sites.
The Reputation Management industry is a competitive one and when there is a lot of competition there is a lot of cheating. If you go to Google and do a search for a reputation management company chances are you will find a plethora of online complaints against them. Don’t be fooled, most if not all of these complaints are from their competition. Even the big brands like ReputationDefender.com have negative mentions of their company spread all over the internet, yet they are still a good company to deal with.
No matter which company you try to deal with to help repair your search engine reputation, they will most likely have online complaints online about them. Don’t let these complaints scare you off; they are almost certainly from competitors.
When choosing a reputation management firm it is important to see how much knowledge they have of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). SEO is the key element when it comes to repairing your online reputation.
