Using Poetry to Reach People
In the dark of the midnight mine eyes a tearful sight
Gloom has finally had its way with me
Of the roses, withered
Of tranquility, dissipated
But the sun will rule by day, surely.
Since time immemorial, since man began a long search to write and find a language to communicate with his fellow man; the innovations to recreate a semblance of civility in speech and writing in the renaissance and the current environment of literary awareness, poetry has always played a significant role in the talk amongst peoples of diverse race, tribe and nation.
From the poetry greats like Yeats, T.S Eliot, Shakespeare to Soyinka and Derek Walcott, all of them in varied degrees have endeavored to add a legendary, indefatigable and infinite, as far as time and space is concerned, bid to reach people.
Reiki poetry is one such endeavor to create space of engagement amongst foes and friends, kith and kin and especially amongst the downtrodden in our society. People who, it has been universally accepted are a constant fabric of any society in the world. Those who are sorrowful, disappointed, hurting and alas, spiritually weak.
Reiki poetry is particularly engaged in a spiritual realm especially originating from the Asiatic peoples and has in due time transcended time and space to become relevant to every culture inasmuch as other regions has always had their own traditional poets and poetry.
When we talk of spiritual, what do we mean? Spirituality involves recognition of supernatural powers. Someone who is greater than we are, someone who transcends our ability to think, innovate and recreate among other human abilities. Someone who after all has gone awry and dark can be sought to come to our aid.
Therefore, this poetry is also an attempt to talk to the all powerful, the almighty. It is a form of prayer. A communication among people who in turn speak to their God is a peculiarity of reiki poetry.
But even as recognition of God as a superlative being is adduced, another problem presents itself. The problem is, if God is alive and can be summoned to minister and provide for our needs, where is he when those answers are not forthcoming? The universal troubling query has consequently, also been why do people suffer?
The pursuit of these answers is therefore done through reiki poetry. And this is where the real communication to particularly reach people is done. Reiki becomes a vehicle to generate words of comfort to the beat, words of encouragement to the fallen, words of justice to the downtrodden and words of hope to the hopeless.
This form of poetry is written for reading by the mass media or read in front of people as a tool to induce thought and meditation among the listeners. It is always not long but efficiently uses brevity to enable listeners to catch the crux of the central theme very quickly and retain it for long.
This poetry called reiki will remain with us for long a consummate communicator because it is largely believed that the problems that beset the world are here for a long time.
